During the COVID-19 pandemic, platform-mediated short-term rentals are believed to have performed better than traditional tourism accommodation due tourist preferences and possibility of evading some sanitary regulations. The paper investigates this difference in 31 European countries by combining conventional hotel statistics with novel data on short-stay (SSA) gathered Eurostat from four major platforms mediating home rentals. first hypothesis that rental lost fewer tourists during pandemic hotels is supported if domestic concerned. second loss was less dependent stringency restrictions only confirmed for small, primarily outbound tourism-generating countries. study results shed light pandemic-induced travel substitution, discussion regulation rentals, utility SSA as a new research source.
